Abstract

A stereospecific catalyst for the polymerization of a -olefins, e.g. propylene is prepared from (1) a solid hydrocarbon-insoluble compound of a Group IV(A), V(A) or VI(A) transition metal, (2) an organometallic compound of a Group II metal or aluminium and (3) 0,1 to 10 mols. per 100 mols of component (1) of a salt of an organic ternary or quaternary base of a Group V(B) or VI(B) element ("A") of formula A(R)nX. Wherein R is alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl, n is 4 when A is a Group V(B) element and 3 when A is a Group VI(B) element, and X is halogen. Component (3) may be used as a complex with the organometallic compound (2), or combined with transition metal component (1); in the latter case a Group VIII metal compound may be used as (4) an additional component. Specified components are (1) VCl3, TiCl2, TiCl3; (2) BeEt2, AlEt3; (3) Me3SI, nBu3EtPI and n-Bu4NI and complexes of the latter with AlEt3, AliBu3 and TiCl3; (4) CoCl2.
