Abstract

895,416. Welding by pressure. AEROPROJECTS Inc. April 10, 1959 [June 3, 1958], No. 7869/61. Divided out of 895,413. Class 83 (4). A ring-type weld between juxtaposed metal members essentially lacks a cast structure and the members which have a highly disturbed interfacial region corresponding to the weld are externally deformed by the weld to an extent of less than 10%. A ring type weld is effected between two aluminium alloy sheets using the ultrasonic apparatus described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of Specification 895,413 and a discontinuous ring type weld as shown in Fig. 3 is produced by an annular tip having shallow notches as described with reference to Fig. 8 of Specification 895,413. The metal cap 94, Fig. 4, of a transistor 90 is welded to the base 96 of another metal using the apparatus described with reference to Figs. 1, 2, 13, 14 and 15 of Specification 895,413. It is stated that the weld may be used to encapsulate medical and surgical items. External deformation is the change in dimensions of the weld zone expressed as a percentage of the aggregate thickness of the weld members prior to welding.
