Abstract

895,307. Automatic steering control systems. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. Sept. 22, 1960 [Oct. L, 1959], No. 33363/59. Class 38 (4). An actuator system for control surfaces of a dirigible craft has inputs applied through two mechanical differential mechanisms to provide either manual control, automatically stabilized manual control, or completely automatic steering, by suitably engaging or disengaging various clamps and couplings. In Fig. 1, the position of an aircraft control surface 9 may be adjusted by manual operation of a control column 1 acting through a linkage 4 on the control valve 7 of a fixed piston type hydraulic actuator 8. Under these conditions an input member 16a of a differential 14 is electromagnetically declutched to remove follow-up from the control surface, and the output member 13a, which is also controlled by electric signals from an automatic pilot 15, is clamped to the airframe by a further electromagnetic clutch. Output member 13a may, however, be released and the portion of automatic pilot 15 responsive to oscillation of the aircraft rendered effective to control the position of end 12 of linkage 4 to damp oscillations during manual control. Electrical position and rate feed-back signals are developed within differential 14 which is described in detail. When automatic steering of the aircraft is desired, automatic pilot 15 is rendered fully effective and input member 16a clutched to differential 14 to provide follow-up. Control column 1 is made to follow the automatic steering by engaging a lock 19 to couple the control surface to the steering column. Use of a moving piston type actuator with a further differential is referred to.
