Abstract
895,144. Grinding and polishing. HAUSCHILD, H., and HAUSCHILD, W. May 20, 1958, No. 16106/58. Class 60. A machine for grinding or polishing cutlery or the like comprises a frame 1, Fig. 1, to which is pivotally mounted a bridge 24 for receiving a clamping device for the cutlery. The frame supports shafts 3 which are belt-driven from an electric motor 5 and carry bushes 9 engaging square spindles 8 on which are mounted grinding or polishing wheels 7 of different diameters. The bushes engaging the right-hand end of the spindles are axially movable by means of handles 12 to permit removal and replacement of the spindles and wheels 7. The clamping device is removably-mounted on the bridge 24 supported by rods 23 engaging tubular guides 22 mounted on a plate 18 pivoted on a spindle 19 carried by the frame 1. Operation of a handle 35, Fig. 4, pivots the plate 18 to position the clamping device for operation opposite one or other of the spindles, the actual position being determined by rotation of feet 21 about a pivot on the plate 18 against a spring 39; the feet in one position about the base and in the other an upstanding portion on the base. A lever system is pivoted to pins 27 on the plate and has a counterweight on one arm 29 and a foot pedal 33 on the other arm 28; the arm 28 is also connected by a pin 31 to the rod 23 so that by operation of the foot pedal, the rods 23 can be depressed against the force of the counterweight to disengage the workpieces from the wheels 7. The clamping device for holding workpieces, such as spoons having concave surfaces to be ground and polished, enables three dimensional movements to be imparted to the spoons and consists of a plurality of supports 53, Fig. 9, for the bowl portions of the spoons and clamps 54 for the handles carried on levers 50 which are pivoted to a frame 40 slidable by means of a handle 44, on a rod 43 rotatably mounted in bearings 26, Fig. 7, on the bridge 24, stops 47 limiting the movement of the frame. The levers 50 are connected to a rod 51 and a handle 48 attached to one of the levers permits oscillation between stops 55 of the levers about their pivots 49. A similar embodiment of clamping device for enabling the convex surface of the spoons to be ground or polished consists of a frame 71, Figs. 20 and 21, to which are pivoted levers 50 at one end having clamps 75 for engaging the handles of the spoons and at the other end being pivoted to a rod 51. Two of the pivots 74 for the levers are at one end, and secured to handles 48 and at the other end formed with squares 79 which engage claws 81 and two of a plurality of pins 82 in a rod 80. The pins provide pivots for further levers 50 pivotally connected to a rod 51 and having rubber-covered cushioning caps 90 which are upwardly urged by springs 89 to engage the concave surfaces of the spoons. The levers 50 carrying the caps 90 and the clamps for the handles are oscillated in unison about the pins 74,82, by the handles 48. The frame 80 is releasably secured to the rod 71 by clamping bolts 85. In another embodiment of the clamping device which enables flat workpieces, such as the handles of forks 62 and spoons 63, Figs. 17 and 18, and other flat tools such as screwdrivers, spanners, chisels, &c., to be ground and polished, the device comprises a slide 60, which is disposed on pivots 69 on the rods 23 and provided with a handle 68, and a carriage 66 having upstanding brackets receiving pins 59 on a frame 58, the pins being secured in position by latches 61. The frame has an element 56 which cooperates with an element 57 rotatable about pins 70 in the frame and is clampable to hold the workpieces 62,63 in position by levers 64. The sliding movement of the carriage is controlled by a handle 67 and the rocking movement of the device on the pivots 69 by the handle 68.
