Abstract

A process for the production of membrane filters of graduated pore size from synthetic resins comprises dissolving the resin in a first solvent, adding to the solution a second and less volatile solvent which is compatible with the solution but does not dissolve the resin, forming a layer from the homogeneous solution so obtained and allowing it to mature without evaporation of solvent, then gelatinising the layer by slowly evaporating the solvents to yield a gel in which the major constituent of the liquid phase is said second solvent, washing out the solvent from the gel by contracting with a liquid which is miscible with the second solvent and drying the resulting membrane filter. The resin may be polystyrene, the first solvent benzene and the second solvent acetone, methyl acetate, cyclohexanol or methylcyclohexanol. Large pore sizes may be obtained where the second solvent is a non-solvent for the resin, smaller sizes where it is a swelling agent for the resin. The membranes may be irradiated, e.g. with a cobalt-60 source, to crosslink the resin, and may be after-treated to introduce ionic groups, e.g. sulphonic acid and quaternary ammonium groups.
