Abstract

A copolymer of 25 to 70% by weight of methyl methacrylate and/or styrene units with butadiene-1, 3, containing 0,05 to 13,5% by weight of free carboxyl groups and having a gel content p of at least 50%, may be prepared by polymerization in aqueous emulsion. The reaction mixture may comprise a continuous aqueous phase containing in solution an emulsifying agent and preferably a polymerization catalyst, and a discontinuous monomer phase dispersed in the aqueous phase. Emulsifying agents specified are sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, sodium or potassium oleate, stearate or palmitate, or the hydrogenated and dehydrogenated rosin soaps. Polymerization catalysts specified are hydrogen peroxide, or the alkali metal or ammonium persulphates, or the organic peroxides and hydroperoxides. Polymerization modifiers may also be used and those specified are di(sec-butyl) disulphide, di(2 methyl butyl) disulphide, and dialkyl zanthogen disulphides, diorthodinitrophenyl disulphide, or dodecyl mercaptan. Alternatively, the copolymer may be prepared by adding a small amount of a monomer having at least two <FORM:0894803/IV (a)/1> groups per molecule, e.g. divinyl benzene or glycol dimethacrylate. The carboxyl groups may be introduced into the copolymer by polymerizing butadiene-1, 3 and methyl methacrylate and/or styrene together with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; acids specified are acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, cinnamic acid, maleic acid, and fumaric acid. Alternatively, the carboxyl groups may be introduced by hydrolysing some of the ester groups in the copolymer where methyl methacrylate is a component during or after polymerization. Hydrolysing agents specified are hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, dichloracetic acid, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide; quaternary ammonium bases; and various primary, secondary and tertiary amines. The copolymers may be used as bonding agents for natural and synthetic fibres. It is preferably to cure the bonding agent, for example with zinc oxide, or the metal salts of an amphoteric hydroxide, e.g. sodium aluminate, or a metal borate or silicate. The copolymer may also be cured by means of the water-dispersible precondensate products of aldehydes with for example, phenols, substituted phenols, e.g. alkyl phenols, urea, thiourea, dicyanamide and melamine, particularly by means of the pre-condensate of melamine, urea, or ethylene urea with formaldehyde.
