Abstract
894,716. Aircraft. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Aug. 27, 1959 [Sept. 1, 1958], No. 28069/58. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] An aircraft comprises a body of substantially rectangular transverse section with a wing 12 with a swept back leading edge on each side of the body which contains an air duct at least a forward portion of which is of rectangular crosssection and extends across the whole width of the body, the duct terminating at the forward end of the body in an intake 22 bounded on one horizontal side by a compression surface 23 oblique to the direction of flight, a rear end portion of the duct occupying the whole width and depth of the body and containing air heating means and a propulsion nozzle system, an intermediate portion 19 of the duct being a divergent diffuser section. The diffuser contains structural airflow straightening grids 44. The upper wall 40 of the diffuser and the upper wall 16 of the body define spaces 47, 48 for fuel and passengers respectively. A forward wedge shaped portion 26 forming the crew compartment pivots about a lateral axis 27 together with the leading parts 12a of the wings, to the position shown in chain-dot lines, Fig. 1, for low speed flight, and the forward part 24 of the lower wall 15 of the duct and body pivots simultaneously about pivot 24a. The upper surfaces of the wings and body are continuous apart from fences 17. Observation windows such as 46 are provided in the upper and lower (not shown) surfaces of the portion 26. Side wall cavities 20 in the body house retractable landing gear 21. The air heating section is divided in two by a partition 31 structurally integral with a fin 18, and each part contains four gas turbine engines 33 in two superimposed pairs, and a ram jet heater 32.
