Abstract

The invention comprises water-insoluble dyes of formula <FORM:0894661/IV (c)/1> where Ar is a phenol or naphthol nucleus substituted by a carboxy or carboxylic acid ester group, and optionally by an alkyl group, and when Ar is a phenol nucleus then R is H and R1 Me, whilst when Ar is a naphthol nucleus R is Me and R1 is H. The dyes are made by conventional methods. The dyes are used to colour polyolefinic materials by direct application at the boiling temperature of the dye-bath, Examples are provided of the preparation of brown dyes.
