A system to programme control the production of ingots in an arc furnace comprises a controller which automatically initiates the arc, brings the arc to full power, and reduces the power at the end of the melt. The programme is controlled by a timer, and interlocks are provided to prevent operation in the absence of cooling water &c. The height of the ingot is controlled by a gamma ray source impinging on a Geiger counter, the rays being interrupted by the rising ingot level.
