838,120. Electric arc furnace controls. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., YEOMANS, D. E., BUSBY, A. D., BEECH, A. B., and BURTON, J. S. June 16, 1958 [June 27, 1957], No. 20375/57. Class 40 (3). In an arc furnace 1 having a consumable electrode 3, the electrode is arranged between a source 7 of gamma rays &c. and a detector 17 which indicates when the electrode has melted away to a predetermined extent. The source 7 is releasably carried by a holder 9 connected by a cable 10 passing around fixed and adjustable pulleys to a ram 5 which carries the electrode 3. The pulley 13 is adjustable horizontally to vary the height of the source 7 relatively to the electrode 3, and the pulley 14 is adjustable vertically to allow the source 7 to be deposited in a lead-lined housing 15.
