Abstract

894,545. Tool-holders. ELLEDGE, M. D., and MANN, W. I. April 1, 1960 [April 6, 1959], No. 11662/60. Class 83 (3). A rotating or non-rotating tool-holder for lathes, milling machines, &c., comprises means for locking a tool-head 2 in a socket 3 against relative rotary movement, and separate means for locking the head 2 axially in the socket. The socket 3 is split at 6a, Fig. 3, and is clamped on a bar or rotating spindle A by a bolt 6, and has a tapered-bore 7 for receiving the toolhead 2. A pin 13 in the socket engages a slot 11 in the tool-head to prevent relative rotation of the members 2, 3, and a second pin 15 engages a helical slot 12 in the head 2 to force the latter axially into and out of the bore 7. A peripheral groove 14 on the socket, contains a channel sectioned quadrant 18, two pairs of legs 17, and a quadrant 16 to which the pin 15 is secured. The members 16-18 occupy the complete length of the groove 14, and are rotated in the groove by a ring 19 secured to the quadrant 16, the members being pre-tensioned in a clockwise direction by a spring 22 secured to a pair of legs 17 at 23, and to the socket 3 at 21, the rotation being limited by the ends of a slot 24 in the socket 3. In operation, the ring 19 is rotated counterclockwise against the spring until the pin 15 is axially aligned with the pin 13, the tool-head is inserted, thus engaging the pin 13 in the slot 11, and the ring 19 is released to allow the pin 15 to enter the slot 12, and due to the helix of the slot, the head is drawn into the socket. The split end 6a of the socket may be replaced by a tapered shank for securing to a machine spindle by a draw-bar. In a modification, the socket 29, Fig. 9, is secured to a milling machine spindle S by a sliding sleeve S<SP>1</SP>, actuated by a draw-bar R, the socket being locked on the spindle against rotation by a split ring E, which is expanded by the spindle S when the drawbar is rotated.
