Abstract
893,936. Dielectric heating apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 29, 1960 [July 31, 1959], No. 26388/59. Class 39(3) In a method of heating material in a cavity resonator between the ends of which is established a standing wire pattern, the cut-off frequency of the cavity, at least in the region where the material to be heated is located, is made equal to the frequency of the applied ultra high frequency energy so that a substantially uniform field distribution is obtained over that region of the cavity. The heating apparatus comprises a cavity resonator in which a standing ware pattern is set up between laterally movable end piston 4 and a matching iris 7, the material to be heated is located in the centre of the cavity and the middle region of the cavity is tuned by means of adjustable side plates 2, 3 to the cut-off frequency. In the case of heating strip material, this passes through the cavity in a plane parallel to the electric field vector through choked slots 5. The distance between the iris 7, the piston 4 and the respective nearest edges of the strip is preferably #/4. If desired the strip may pass through a plurality of such cavities arranged side-by-side. Alternatively the cavity may be provided with an operable wall so that other objects may be placed in it and thus heated.
