In an automatic temperature-control system, variations of temperature produced by an electric heater influence a resistance thermometer in a bridge circuit supplied with pulses of half-wave rectified A.C. so that output from the bridge circuit when unbalanced in one sense starts an oscillator to switch the heater on by operating a relay. In Fig. 3 a resistor 21, variable with a temperature produced by a heater 65, e.g. in a radiation gauge, forms part of a bridge circuit supplied with unidirectional pulses through a rectifier 20. The arrangement is such that if the temperature falls below a predetermined value the output pulses from the bridge circuit are of a suitable polarity to trigger a blocking oscillator transistor 30. The resulting output from blocking oscillator transformer 29 triggers a further blocking oscillator transistor 44 to operate a relay 52 and thereby energize heater 65. Relay 52 is operated intermittently to maintain the desired temperature but operation at the pulse frequency is prevented by condenser 54. The blocking oscillators are provided with damping diodes 34a, 49 and a thermistor 32 varies the bias applied to transistor 30 to compensate for ambient temperature changes.
