Abstract

893,310. Capacitors. TELEGRAPH CONDENSER CO. Ltd. (Sprague Electric Co.). Aug. 31, 1960, No. 29999/60. Class 37. A capacitor element 12 (Fig. 1) is housed in a metal, e.g. aluminium can 10 lined with, e.g., paper 14 (which may be omitted) and a resilient tab 20 connected to one foil is welded to the inner surface of the can end to whose outer end surface is also welded an external lead 24; the capacitor element being wound on a metal, e.g. aluminium, riser 16 connected to the other foil and extending outwardly of the can through a rubber bush 30 over which the open end of the can is rolled to effect a seal; a further external lead 38 being welded to the riser. The capacitor element may be electrolytic. In manufacture the riser of the capacitor element is clamped in a spot-welding electrode 41 (Fig. 2) and an opposed electrode 42 supports in block 44 the lead 38 having (Fig. 4, not shown) a ball end surrounded by an annular conical collar to assist in welding the opposed lead and riser. Thereafter the grummet 30 is placed over the lead and riser, and tab 20 is inserted into can 10 inverted over upstanding tungsten tipped anvil 64 of welding electrode 62 (Fig. 3), while electrode 61 carries lead 24 whose end has similar configuration to lead 38. The lead and the tab are simultaneously welded internally and externally of the can and element 12 may then be inserted therein with folding of the tab; the can being rolled and crimped over the bush 30 for sealing. The capacitor element may be impregnated before insertion in the can; or the whole assembly may be vacuum-impregnated thereafter. The tab and riser may be crimped, staked, or spot-welded to the capacitor foils, lead 38 may be omitted using the riser as a terminal connection, and lead 24 may be crimped into a socket formed within the closed end of the can, which may be of steel or brass for non-electrolytic capacitors, or aluminium, tantalum, or silver for electrolytic capacitors. It may also be formed of plural inter-fitting metal laminations welded together simultaneously with the welding of the tab and external lead.
