Abstract

893,260. Explosive compositions; blasting. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Sept. 22, 1959 [Sept. 29, 1958], No. 32193/59. Drawings to Specification. Classes 9(2) and 68(1). An explosive composition comprises ammonium nitrate and a metal or an alloy thereof of low atomic weight of group 1, 2 and 3 of the periodic classification, in the form of coarse particles which are substantially free from fine or powdered metal, particularly from metal having a particle size finer than passing an 80 mesh sieve (American Standard), and sufficient water to form a saturated solution of the ammonium nitrate. The metal may be a 90 Mg-10 Al alloy or Zn-Mg or Zn-Al-Mg alloys, especially if they contain from 40 to nearly 100% of Mg, and may be used in an amount of 2.5 to 10.0% of the nitrate, which may be of standard prilled fertilizer grade. When used for blasting in bore holes the charge may be allowed to age in situ, and detonated when the temperature of the mass becomes steady.
