Abstract

A process for the manufacture of foamed cellular polyurethane materials by interaction of organic polyisocyanates and polyesters is characterized in that the organic polyisocyanate is first interacted at a temperature between 70 DEG C. and 140 DEG C. with from 10% to 70% by weight of the polyester, and the product so obtained is then mixed with the remaining quantity of polyester and water, preferably in the presence of a basic catalyst, to give a mixture which reacts to form a foam. Diisocyanates (with which up to 20 mol. per cent of triisocyanates may be mixed) are listed. Also specified are dicarboxylic acids, glycols, polyhydric alcohols and amino alcohols from which the polyesters are prepared. In the initial interaction usually between 4 and 20, preferably between 8 and 14 moles of polyisocyanate for each mole of polyester is used. In an Example (1) a prepolymer is prepared from a diethylene glycol/pentaerythritol adipate copolyester and tolylene -2:4 and 2:6- diisocyanates by heating at 110 DEG C. It is stirred with a mixture of further polyester (in amount equal to that used in preparing the prepolymer), dimethylcyclohexylamine, an alkylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate and water, reaction to form a foam taking place.ALSO:A process for the manufacture of foamed cellular polyurethane materials by interaction of organic polyisocyanates and polyesters is characterized in that the organic polyisocyanate is first interacted at a temperature between 70 DEG and 140 DEG C. with from 10% to 70% by weight of the polyester, and the product so obtained is then mixed with the remaining quantity of polyester and water, preferably in the presence of a basic catalyst, to give a mixture which reacts to form a foam. Diisocyanates (with which up to 20 mol percent of triisocyanates may be mixed) are listed. Also specified are dicarboxylic acids, glycols, polyhydric alcohols and aminoalcohols from which the polyesters are prepared. In the initial interaction usually between 4 and 20, preferably between 8 and 14 moles of polyisocyanate for each mole of polyester is used. Tertiary amines and sodium carbonates are listed catalysts. In an example (1) a prepolymer is prepared from a diethylene glycol/pentoerythritol adipate copolyester and tolylene -2 : 4- and 2 : 6- diisocyanates by heating at 110 DEG C. It is stirred with a mixture of further polyester (in amount equal to that used in preparing the prepolymer), dimethyl cyclohexylamine, an alkylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate and water, reaction to form a foamed product taking place. The foam-forming mixture may be applied to a substrate or foaming may also be effected between two substrates to give a laminate. In a further process the composition is applied to a rotating cardboard tube, to give a cylinder of resilient foam having an impervious skin.
