Abstract
An elastic yarn is produced by spinning a solution of a sulphochlorinated high molecular weight linear propylene/ethylene copolymer in an organic solvent, the solution containing one or more vulcanizing agents. The solvent (and any coagulating agent derived from a coagulating bath, if used) is removed from the filaments thereby obtained and they are vulcanized at 125 DEG to 170 DEG C. The copolymer preferably contains 30-80% of ethylene, has a molecular weight of 50,000-300,000, a sulphur content of 1-3% and a chloride content of 4-15%. The concentration of the solution may be 3 to 20% and the solvent may be benzene, chlorobenzene or carbon tetrachloride. In an example, a 7% solution in carbon tetrachloride, to which solution has been added (based on the weight of the copolymer) 40% of litharge, 2,5% of hydrogenated rosin and 0,25% of N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazol-sulphamide, of a sulphochlorinated ethylene/propylene copolymer containing 40% of ethylene, 1,9% of sulphur and 7,8% of chlorine, is wet spun at 15 DEG to 40 DEG C. into a methanol coagulating bath. The filaments thus produced are dried and vulcanized in an autoclave, with the aid of live steam, at 145 DEG C. for 30 minutes. The yarns of the invention are more stable to oxygen, ozone, ultra violet light and weathering than are natural rubber yarns.
