Abstract
892,986. Doppler radar. BENDIX CORPORATION. March 15, 1960 [March 30, 1959], No. 9162/60. Class 40(7). In a C.W. Doppler radar or like sonic or ultrasonic system in which the transmitted and received signals are heterodyned to give a beat signal indicative of the relative radial velocity of the reflecting object, the frequency of the transmitted signal is varied in discrete steps of magnitude #F and duration t, Fig. 5, so that objects within a range corresponding to an echo time t will produce a beat signal component of frequency Fd equal to the Doppler frequency which may be selected by a low-pass filter and objects within range limits corresponding to echo times (n-1)t and (n-1)t will produce beat frequency components n#F + Fd which may be selected by a band-pass filter having a centre frequency n#F. The invention is described as applied to a vehicle Doppler radar for determining the sense of the radial velocity as described in Specification 888,975 in which the echo signal is heterodyned separately in detectors 40, 42 with phase quadrature outputs from the transmitter klystron oscillator 26 to give phase quadrature Doppler frequency signals which are applied through amplifiers 54, 56 to a velocity sense discriminator 58, 60, 62. According to the present invention beat frequency components corresponding to objects within predetermined range limits are selected by applying the outputs from the detectors 40, 42 to the amplifiers 54, 56 through lowpass or band-pass filters 50, 52 and by varying the frequency of the klystron 26 as shown in Fig. 5 by means of a corresponding voltage waveform produced by applying the output, Fig. 2, from an oscillator 20 to a squarer and differentiator 22 to give a pulse train, Fig. 4, of recurrence period t which is integrated at 24, the output from the integrator 24 being restored to its initial value after a period T by a blocking-oscillator discharge circuit 28.
