A lace machine bobbin 2 is retained within the aperture 3 of its carriage body 1 by a spring 5 which is itself retained in the major plane of the carriage by the provision in the body of a groove 7 in which the spring slides. A nib 10 of the spring engages between the plates of the bobbin and a projecting part 9 of the spring is located in the groove 7. An enlargement 6 of the aperture enables the spring to be moved so that its part 9 may be withdrawn from the groove, in order to adjust the spring and therefore the tension under which the thread is withdrawn through a hole 8.
