Abstract

An amidoamine soap of the formula <FORM:0892897/IV (b)/1> in which R1 and R5 are C11-19 alkyl or alkenyl groups or abietyl groups, R2, R4 and R14 are hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl groups, R3 and R13 are C2-18 alkylene radicals and x is an integer from 0 to 10, is prepared by reacting an amine R2NH-[R3-NH]x-R13 -NR4R14 with two moles of a C12-20 fatty acid or abietic acid (tall oil) to form a salt <FORM:0892897/IV (b)/2> which is then heated until one of the soap groups decomposes to an amide group. Specifications 607,604 and 677,935 are referred to.ALSO:A bituminous composition comprises asphalt and an anti stripping additive which comprises an amidoamine soap of the formula:- <FORM:0892897/V/1> in which R1 and R5 are alkyl groups with 11 to 19 carbon atoms or are abietyl groups, R2, R4 and R14 are hydrogen or alkyl groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R3 and R13 are alkylene radicals with 2 to 18 carbon atoms, and x is an integer from 0 to 10, together with 2,5 to 15 equivalent weights of an amine per equivalent of the acid in the soap, said amine containing 2 to 18 carbon atoms. 0,1% to 3% by weight of this additive is added to blown or unblown petroleum or mineral asphalt. Examples of the amidoamine soaps are oleylamidoamine oleate, the abietic acid compound of ethylene diamine, the stearic acid compound of diethylene triamine and compounds in which the NH2 in the above examples is the residue of a tertiary amine. The acid part of the soap is a higher fatty acid or abietic acid. The reaction between the amine and the acid is effected at 150 DEG C. to form the amidoamine soap and the excess amine is then added to form the anti stripping additive.
