Abstract
892,571. Road signals for controlling traffic. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. April 25, 1960 [April 23, 1959], No. 14444/60. Class 118. In a traffic light control system a first stepping register ZS1, or ZS2, Fig. 1a grounds sequentially the terminals 1 to 100, or 1 to 60, respectively (depending upon the length of cycle chosen by operation of ps1 or ps2) at onesecond intervals, the ground in each case being extended via a programme generating crossconnection field PG to one or more of the terminals 1/1... 1/10, 2/1. . . 2/10, 10/1. . . 10/10. A second stepping register V scans these terminals cyclically and extends each to the relevant ones of ten X and ten Y conductors, these being indicated by the numbers on the left and right of the oblique stroke in the designation of each terminal. Two relay chains JDx and JDy, Fig. 1b are driven by a third stepping register and cause relays JX and JY to send pulses on the x and y conductors to the traffic light locations, the X and Y conductors marked determining the number of pulses sent by stopping the operation of the JDx and JDy chains. At the locations the reception of the pulses effects the lighting of the required lights. Control station equipment.-The stepping registers ZS1 and ZS2 are driven at one step per second by the generator TZ, the choice of programme is effected by closure of contact ps1 or ps2, and assuming the former to be closed, the contacts t1 to t100 are sequentially grounded at one second intervals. The stepping register V is driven at 500 steps per second by generator TV1 until ground is encountered via a closed contact such as V1, whereupon TU pulls up and the generator TV2 drives V at 500 - steps per second until an unmarked contact 12. is reached, the register continuing to be driven in like manner. During the period that a marked contact is closed ground is extended via the relevant X and Y conductors to the correspondingly marked circles in the relay chains JDx and JDy. The chains JDx and JDy receive positive pulses via contacts ti of generator TJ operating at 250 c.p.s., and, considering the JDx chain, as soon as one of the X conductors is grounded relay Z1 operates when next ti is in its left-hand position. If the marked conductor is the nth the first n relays operate in succession, no operating ground being available for the (n+ 1)th relay. Each time a relay of the chain operates, JX is energized in series with its second winding and delivers a pulse to the x conductor. Operation of the JDy chain and JY is similar. Equipment at traffic light location.-The pulses received over the x and y conductors step the 10-point uniselectors Ex and Ey, respectively, Fig. 2, thus closing that contact of the 10 X 10 matrix Sch which corresponds to the energized ones of the windings X1 to X10 and Y1 to Y10. Traffic lights Sg1 are controlled by relays Rt1, Ge1 and Cr1 actuated via bus-bars a, b, c, d and e to light the amber, red, amber and red, green, and amber and green lamps, each relay or relay combination holding until the next is - energized.
