Abstract

Class 120(3) [Also in Group XXXII] A method of assembling a flange 15 on a hub 10 of wood or like yieldable material comprises counterboring at 11 one end of the hub 10, which end has an outer contour in the form of a truncated double-ended cone 12 merging with a shoulder 13; forcing said end through the narrowest portion 16 of a tapered hole 14 until the flange 15 abuts the shoulder 13 and a portion 19 of the cone 12 projects from the flange; inserting a tapered plug 18 into the counterbore 11 to cause the end to expand to lock with the flange 15; and severing the portion 19 and the projecting part of the hub 10 so that the ends of the hub and plug are flush with the outer surface of the flange. The method applies particularly to assembling a flange on the barrel of a bobbin. Before assembly glue is applied to the part of the flange 15 surrounding the hole 14 and to the cone 12 and serves as a lubricant during the passage of the oversize cone 12 through the hole 14.
