Abstract

A process for the production of wipe-, scratch-, moisture-, and corrosion-resistant coatings on zinc-end cadmium-clad surfaces consists in immersing the surfaces in a chromic acid solution containing at least 30% of chlorine ions based on the weight of chromic acid, together with buffering substances and substances which stabilize the redox potential of the solution. The chlorine ions are preferably formed from alkali chlorides. Examples of stabilizers are potassium chlorate and potassium nitrate; the buffer substances are preferably chlorides of weak bases.
