Abstract

891,299. Valves. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Aug. 1, 1958 [Aug. 2, 1957], No. 24650/57. Class 135. [Also in Group XL (a)] In apparatus, e.g. a nuclear reactor, where it is desired that the fluid flowing in ducts 1 which are arranged in a set of columns and rows C, R, Fig. 1, be periodically tested, e.g. for content of fission products, the ducts are individually associated with valves, the actuating means of which are arranged in a co-ordinate system of rows and columns. In the first example, Fig. 2, a common rotary or reciprooable valve actuator 4 is associated with each column C and a similar actuator 6 with each row R. A rubber tube 3 passes through each duct. Any duct 1 may be opened by actuation of the associated actuators 4 and 6. In the second example, Fig. 3, each duct 1 leads via the bore in a sleeve 15 to a testing conduit 8. Associated with each sleeve is a double piston arrangement 12, 13. A conduit 9 leads to the piston 12 and a conduit 10 to the piston 13. When fluid under pressure is supplied to conduit 10 the piston 13 is raised so that the closure pad 16 closes the associated duct 1 and when fluid under pressure is supplied to the conduit 9 both pistons 12, 13 are raised so that the associated duct 1 is closed. The conduit 9 and 10 are arranged in rows and columns so that if pressure is released from conduits 9 and 10 the fluid in the associated duet 1 moves the closure member 16 away from its seat to interconnect the duct with the testing duct 8.
