Abstract
891,149. Refining metals. RUMMEL, R. April 18, 1958 [April 18, 1957], No. 12380/58. Classes 72 and 82(1). A method of refining metals comprises introducing the refining agents into the molten metal by the injection of gases through nozzles which are disposed round the periphery of a container in a direction tangential to an imaginary horizontal closed curve smaller than and concentric with the periphery of the container and also tangential to an imaginary vertical closed curve. As shown, a vessel 1 has nozzles disposed as indicated by the arrows 4, 12, 15 round the vessel tangentially to a horizontal curve 5 and each nozzle is also tangential to a curve 10, the resultant movement of the bath being a spiral. The nozzles 15 above the bath may be directed downwardly at an angle of 45 degrees to the surface of the bath. Solid and/or liquid reagents may be suspended in the blast gas which may be a reagent, e.g. oxygen, or may be non reactive, e.g. nitrogen.
