Abstract

A metal surface is protected against corrosion by wetting the surface with an aminated organosilicon compound which is a polyaminoalkyltrialkoxy silane, an alcohol-soluble hydrolysate thereof or an acid salt of either (these compounds are described in Specifications 858,445 and 889,001), and drying the metal surface. In addition to the above compound a bis (polyaminoalkyl) di-alkoxy silane may be used in amount of up to 50% mol. The compounds may be used per se or preferably in the form of solutions in an alcohol, a hydrocarbon preferably containing an alcohol, a lower alkyl ether or dioxane, or in water. The applied coating is preferably cured by heating with or without siloxane curing catalysts. In examples copper strips, a copper-clad saucepan and frying pan and steel panels are coated in the above manner, the coated steel panels being further coated with a siloxane resin, as described in Specification 848,373. The aminated organosilicon compounds can also be incorporated into conventional metal cleaning and polishing compositions in the form of suspensions, solutions or pastes (based on an organic solvent system) or suspensions or emulsions (based on an aqueous system) containing optional additives such as abrasives, e.g. silica, waxes, e.g. paraffin, mineral, ozokerite and montan waxes, and emulsifying agents. The aqueous systems may be thickened with methyl- or carboxymethyl-cellulose and the solvent systems with metal salts, e.g. aluminium stearate. Liquid dialkyl- or akylaryl-siloxanes may also be added.ALSO:The aminated organosilicon compounds described in Specifications 858,445 and 889,001 are used for protecting metal surfaces against corrosion (see Group III) either per se or preferably in the form of solutions in an alcohol (e.g. methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, ethylene- or propylene-glycol or their ethers), a hydrocarbon (e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene or mineral spirits) preferably containing an alcohol, a lower alkyl ether or dioxane, or in water. The applied coating is preferably cured by heating with or without siloxane curing catalysts such as metal carboxylates or materials which are reactive toward the amine functional groups. The organosilicon compounds can also be incorporated into conventional metal cleaning and polishing compositions in the form of suspensions, solutions or pastes (based on an organic solvent system) or suspensions or emulsions (based on an aqueous system) containing optional additives such as abrasives, e.g. silica, waxes, e.g. paraffin, mineral, ozokerite and montan waxes, and emulsifying agents. The aqueous systems may be thickened with methyl-or carboxymethyl-cellulose and the solvent systems with metal salts, e.g. aluminium stearate. Liquid dialkyl- or alkylarylsiloxanes may also be added. Specification 848,373 also is referred to.
