Abstract

890,629. Fluid pressure brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. March 6, 1958 [March 12, 1957], No. 8140/57. Class 103 (1). A servo-assisted brake operating mechanism for road vehicles of the kind in which the output of a vacuum-operated piston and cylinder type servo motor is transmitted through an hydraulic system to the brake-actuating cylinders of the road wheels, the servomotor being of the vacuum-suspended type, has an hydraulic cylinder forming part of the hydraulic system supported on an end wall of the servomotor for actuation by the servo piston through a thrustrod, and a vacuum reservoir in the form of a supplementary cylinder section supported coaxially of the servo cylinder to form a unit therewith, said reservoir being connected to that end of the servo cylinder permanently maintained under vacuum and having a reserve of negative pressure sufficient for at least several brake actuations. The servo cylinder 4 comprises a piston 5 which is connected by a thrust-rod 6b to the piston (not shown) of an auxiliary hydraulic cylinder 1 which, together with a control valve 2, is mounted on an end wall 3 of the servomotor. The wall of cylinder 4 seats on a flange of a perforated diaphragm 15, formed with a bearing 16 for the axiallymovable thrust-rod 6b and a supplementary cylinder 4a is positioned between diaphragm 15 and end wall 3, the whole being clamped together by bolts. A conduit 8 places valve 2 in communication with the outer part of cylinder 4 by a connection, not shown, and the inner part of the cylinder, and cylinder 4a, is connected to a source of vacuum through a connection (not shown) in end wall 3. A further embodiment is described in which cylinder 4 is attached directly to end wall 3 and the supplementary cylinder is secured to cylinder 4 by an imperforate wall, the cylinders being individually connected to conduit 8. In a still further embodiment the control valve and hydraulic cylinder mounted on the end wall are enclosed by the supplementary cylinder. It is stated that the unit may be used as a slave vacuum servo unit in a tractor/trailer braking system. Specification 620,407 is referred to.
