Abstract

890,302. Drilling. J-DAPTER CO. June 23, 1959 [June 24, 1958], No. 21556/59. Class 83 (3). A machine for drilling holes in a spherical workpiece 10 comprises means 16, 19 for holding the workpiece and an angularly-adjustable drill 27 movable to-and-from the holding means. A ten-pin bowling ball of rubber or plastic is introduced along a guideway 12a and clamped by a vertically movable disc 16 against spherical seatings 19 on walls 15, the ball being located with a preformed mark P adjacent a fixed pointer 24. The drill 27 is mounted in a housing 75 adjustable by rack gearing about an axis tangent to the ball at P on a slide 30 similarly adjustable on a member 29 about a parallel axis T1 through the centre of the ball. The member 29 is adjustable about a perpendicular axis L2 tangent to the ball at 1 by worm gearing 54 on a similarly adjustabl mounting 28 swinging about an axis L1. Spring abutting the mounting 28 tend to return it to zero position when locking nuts 37 are loosened Each of the angular adjustments may be made against graduated scales. The drill is initially adjusted by hand wheel 87 and rack gearing 88 and is rotated, fed to depth and returned automatically by an electric motor 91.
