Abstract

890,223. Vibratory mechanisms. BRITISH STEEL PILING CO. Ltd. Nov. 3, 1959 [Nov. 7, 1958], No. 35882/58. Classes 80 (3) and 80 (4). An impulse vibrator for pile driving comprises a flywheel 12<SP>1</SP>, driven from a prime mover 10<SP>1</SP>, and a floating link 18<SP>1</SP> which is journalled at one end on a crank-pin 16<SP>1</SP> on the flywheel 12<SP>1</SP> and is pivotally connected at a point intermediate its ends to a rocker link 241. The mass of link 18<SP>1</SP> is concentrated at its free end which is caused to follow the path CDE. At E, the sudden change in direction of the mass 18<SP>1</SP> causes tension in the rocker link 24<SP>1</SP>, which is pivoted on a shaft 22<SP>1</SP> mounted in an outer frame 2<SP>1</SP> attached to the head of a pile 41, and is thereby transmitted as a driving impulse on the pile 4<SP>1</SP> An inner frame 6<SP>1</SP> carries the flywheel 12<SP>1</SP> and prime mover 10<SP>1</SP>, and is resiliently supported with respect to the outer frame 2<SP>1</SP> by leaf springs 8<SP>1</SP>. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement in which three flywheels 12a, 12b and 12c are employed for balancing stray transverse forces, the inertia of each of the outer coaxial systems being half that of the central system. Lubricating pumps 44 actuated by eccentrics on the flywheels 12a, 12c deliver oil to all the bearings.
