Tar &c. is removed from tobacco smoke by passing the smoke through a single orifice of area between 0.0005 and 0.001 square inch so that it impinges at high speed on a barrier 18 on which the tar is deposited. In a cigarette holder, Fig. 3, comprising a mouthpiece 12 and removable holder sleeve 10, the smoke passes through an orifice 17 into a slot 18 the rear wall of which is at a distance of 0.1 inch from the orifice and forms the impingement wall. The smoke flows through space 19a and passage 22 into the mouthpiece passage 13. The tar deposited on wall 18 collects on the surface of the part 14, a ridge 20 preventing it reaching the passage 22. The mouthpiece 12 may be made of nylon, the lips 16 of the inner end being resilient to wipe the inner surface of sleeve 10 when it is removed for cleaning of the inner portion 14. In a modification. Fig. 9, the barrier member is formed by an absorbent filter 36 held in position by a pin 40 which may be used for cleaning the orifice 33. In Fig. 8 the orifice member 27 is situated in the cigarette mouthpiece between a pair of filters 25, 26, the latter forming the impingement member. The parts 25-27 are connected to the cigarette 23 by a connecting strip 24.
