888,792. Wheel balancing apparatus. HOFFMANN, D. Feb. 5, 1960, No. 4178/60. Class 106 (2). A device for determining, the out-of-balance of a wheel whilst retained on a vehicle comprises a transportable housing 1 containing a frictionwheel 10 driven by an electric motor and which wheel drives the jacked-up wheel of the vehicle. An electro-mechanical transducer 35 is secured to the vehicle suspension and triggers a stroboscope lamp 21 during oscillation of the suspension as the vehicle wheel is rotated. By rotating the wheel successively in each direction of rotation a mark on the wheel is seen to occupy two positions. The corresponding upper vertical position of the wheel can then be noted and the midpoint between these two latter points is thereby determined as the out-of-balance position of the wheel. A weight determined by the deflection of an amplitude-indicating instrument 17 can then be selected from a series of pigeon-holes and applied to the wheel. The housing supports a seat 13 covering a tool-box.
