Abstract

888,749. Determining physical qualities of materials; resistance measurement. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. July 3, 1959 [July 23, 1958], No. 22940/59. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (c)] In a method of blending a liquid hydrocarbon or other liquid having a specific resistance greater than 10<10> Q cm. with one or more additions to increase the conductivity and reduce electrostatic charging, the conductivity is measured with the aid of a measuring cell, a direct voltage source and a measuring instrument comprising a D.C. amplifier having a measurement mode and a drift connection mode in which the drift voltage is stored in a capacitor which is connected to the input during the measurement mode. The conductivity between two concentric electrodes E1, E2 immersed in the test liquid is determined by measuring the current flowing between the electrodes when a voltage is applied from battery B. The effect of surface leakage is is minimized by the guard ring E3. The electrodes are connected to the amplifier via a double screened cable. The contacts of a switch S1 are set to position 1 to provide a rest period in which capacitor C is charged with the output drift voltage from the cathode circuit of valve P2. When S1 contacts are set to position 2 the output of battery B is connected to the test electrodes and the charge on capacitor C provides drift correction. The liquid resistance is proportional to the value of the feedback resistor R divided by the indication of the instrument M1. The gain is increased by positive feedback between the cathodes of the two valves. Specification 620,140 is referred to.
