Abstract

<PICT:0888716/IV (a)/1> Polymeric materials, especially alkenyl aromatic polymers such as polystyrene and polyvinyl toluene, are devolatilized by heating the material to the devolatilizing temperature while contained in an enclosed space, and flowing the molten material downwardly and in the form of a continuous coating on an exposed surface such that the volatile material can escape. A suitable form of apparatus for carrying out the process is shown in Fig. 1 which consists of a polymer feed section 6, a heating section 11 and a devolatilizing chamber 13. The polymeric material is admitted through inlet 5 to be distributed to the heating tubes 8, after which it flows downwardly through the conical devolatilizing chamber 13 as a thin coating over its heated, bare metal walls 12 whence it is discharged through outlet 17, the volatile materials passing through the upright vapour conduit 14.
