Abstract
888,321. Cathodes. M-O VALVE CO. Ltd. Nov. 21, 1960 [Nov. 30, 1959], No. 40609/59. Class 39(1) A thermionic cathode includes a wire mesh 11 mounted on and in good thermal contact with a sheet metal base 1, the mesh being embedded in a porous layer 12 of sintered metallic powder the pores of which are loaded with a thermionically emissive material. As shown, the tubular cathode is mounted in a magnetron, intended for pulsed operation, by means of ceramic plugs 2 in molybdenum cups 4 welded to molybdenum discs 5, which have tags 6 welded to tungsten supports 7. The supports 7 also supply current to the heater 8, the cathode tube 1 being connected to one of these supports by a metal strip 10. In manufacture of the cathode, the nickel mesh 11 is first tack-welded and then sintered to the nickel tube 1. The porous layer 12 is formed by applying a suspension of fine nickel powder in amyl acetate with a nitrocellulose binder to the mesh 11 and sintering, further layers being applied, if necessary. Finally, the layer 12 is painted with a suspension of Carium and strontium carbonates in a suitable binder, activation of the cathode being effected during outgassing of the magnetron. Suitable cathode dimensions and sintering temperatures are given.
