Abstract

888,135. Slotting apparatus. GREENWOOD ENGINEERING CO. Inc. Sept. 14, 1960 [Oct. 14, 1959], No. 31690/60. Class 31 (1). An adjustable slotting mechanism for a cutting-machine for making a plurality of spaced slots Z, Z<SP>1</SP> in a carton blank 40 comprises a plurality of spaced discs 48 which are mounted on a shaft 52 and adapted to hold peripherallyspaced blades 30, 32, and a corresponding number of slotter backing rollers 46 mounted on a shaft parallel to the shaft 52, means 64 for moving one of the shafts in parallel relationship with respect to the other, and means 50 for radially moving the blades on the disc to accommodate the change in relationship of the shafts. The blanks are fed successively from a stack by a feed mechanism consisting of a ratchet-wheel rotated at each operation of a printing section of the machine to move a cam having lobes engaging a reciprocating feeder so that a blank is fed after a predetermined number of operations of the printing section. After passing through the printing section, creases Y are formed on the blank by rollers 42, 44 before the slots Z, Z<SP>1</SP> are cut by the blades 30, 32. The blades are adjustably mounted on annular discs 50, in turn secured to the discs 48, for a predetermined spacing of the slots, and a gear 54 on the shaft 52 is driven by a gear 58 connected to a driving gear 62. For a smaller spacing between the slots, the annular discs 50 are removed, the blades are mounted directly on the discs 48, and the shaft 52 is moved by rotation of an eccentric 64, in which the shaft is journalled, to a position wherein the gear 54 engages the gear 56 on the shaft for the backing rollers 46.
