A machine part or component for use in gyratory crushers, grinders and like machines comprises a wear-taking metal portion and a backing layer consisting of or comprising a thermo-setting synthetic plastic in close contact with the metal portion for cushioning the metal portion against stresses applied to it. Preferably, the backing layer comprises an epoxy resin. As shown, the outer conical surface of a bowl liner 14 and the inner conical surface of a mantle 16 are partly relieved so as to form annular cavities 26, 28 between the liners and their crushing elements 10, 12, which cavities are filled with the epoxy resin to form backing layers 30, 32. In a modification, the backing layers extend from the top to the bottom of the liners. The metal portion may have a thickness of at least three inches while the backing layer has a thickness between # inch and ¢ inch. The backing layers are formed by pouring the epoxy resin into the cavities 26, 28 and to ensure that the resin and its curing agent are properly mixed, they may be of different colours or means provided to indicate when the mixture has reached a predetermined temperature. Alternatively, the backing layers may be formed separately or applied to the liners before these are fitted on the crusher. The backing material may include a filler e.g. sand, silica, powdered aluminium, fibre glass particles, bentonite and other clays, synthetic resins, asbestos and talc. To reduce the viscosity of the epoxy resin, the backing layer may include butyl glycidyl, styrene oxide, phenol glycidyl, ether or xylene.
