A method of forming and shaping sheet strips, for example to make guttering, comprises feeding and forming the strip by a drive means including a reciprocated slide, movement of which in one direction effects the feed of the strip, forming of the strip being effected during movement of the slide in the other direction while the strip is held against movement. Strip 8 to be formed passes through edgeforming members 52, 53 and 12 then through edge-forming members 58f and 58w which complete the formation of a water bead f and a reinforcement bead f<SP>1</SP> and over a former 17, flat at its forward end and of U-section at its rearward end which serves to curve the central part of the strip 8. The former 17 is secured to the machine frame, while the members 52, 53, 58f and 58w are connected together by flexible arms 60 and cross members 58a, 65 to form a slide unit 58 which is reciprocated longitudinally of the strip 8 in guides 64 by a connecting rod 57 reciprocated by an eccentric driven by a motor 48. The members 58f, 58w incline inwardly and downwardly towards the exit end of the machine so that on their forward movement they pull the unformed strip 8 into the machine and push completed guttering 7 from the machine. A member 49 may press the strip 8 towards the former 17. When the members 58f, 58w move rearwardly, pivoted brake shoes 9, 13, 14 on cross beams 2, 3, 5 supported on rods 43 pivoted within hollow legs 6 of the machine prevent rearward movement of the strip 8. The shoe 9 may be locked out of operation by a latch 2a. The members 52, 53, 58f, 58w as they move back along the strip 8 shape its edges and, as a consequence of the orientation of the members 58f, 58w relative to the fixed former 17, form the strip over the former. Lubricating funnels 51 are provided on the members 52, 53.
