Abstract

887,790. Work-holders; making punches. LENNIE & THORN Ltd. Aug. 8, 1958 [Sept. 4, 1957], No. 27971/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A work-holder for use with a surface-grinding machine or the like, comprises a base, a member rotatable in the base and means for clamping a workpiece to the member, such means and the workpiece being adjustable in more than one direction transverse to the axis of the member. The workpiece is held by a collet 45, Fig. 1, and centralized with the shaft 12 by slip-gauges between slides 20, 42 and faces 44. Shaft 12 is rotatably held and axially fixed in the base 10 by a lock-nut 14 abutting a shoulder 11 on the shaft 12, the shaft being provided with a set-screw 1 for locking against rotation. The centre of rotation of the workpiece can be varied by adjustment of the slides 20, 42, which can then be locked by screws 50, and the angle of rotation can be checked from the scales 33, 34, Fig. 2. Stops 30 lockable in slots 31 and a pin 32 in the flange 15 of the nut 14, may be used for restricting the rotation of the shaft 12. A punch 35 is finish ground by locating a face 37 parallel with the base of the work-holder and securing the punch in the collet. The face is ground and shaft 12 is moved through 180 degrees and the second face 37 is ground. The punch is then adjusted by moving slide 20 until centre C 1 is aligned with the shaft axes, and the shaft is rotated to allow the grinding wheel to finish radius R 1 . Radius R 2 is similarly finished with centre C 2 aligned with the shaft axis. A hexagonal workpiece may be produced or any required shape by indexing shaft 12 through the required angles.
