Abstract

Compounds of formula <FORM:0887595/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 is the residue of an aldehyde R1CHO and R2, R3, R4 and R5, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, are prepared by reacting an oxazolidone of formula <FORM:0887595/IV (b)/2> with an aldehyde of formula R1CHO, if necessary in the presence of an acid catalyst. The condensation products are claimed per se except for that in which all the R groups are hydrogen. Suitable acid catalysts include organic and inorganic acids, sulphonic ion-exchange resins, acid salts and Lewis acids. The aldehyde is generally in excess. The products are stated to be solvents and plasticisers for polymers. In examples, condensation products are prepared from 2-oxazolidone and formaldehyde, acetaldehyde (these may be used in the form of their polymers), benzaldehyde, chloral hydrate, propionaldehyde, n-heptaldehyde, cinnamaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, acrolein, furfural and glyoxal and from 5-methyl-2-oxazolidone and paraldehyde.
