The bristles and backing member of a brush are moulded in one piece in a mould comprising die plates 32 interleaved with and movable relatively to die plates 48, the die plates 32 having closely spaced bristle-forming cavities 39 extending inwardly from one end thereof. The die plates 48 are supported in grooves 47 in a mould head 43 by means of rods 53 passing through the die plates 48 and through spacer bars 51. The mould head 43 is bolted to a block 14 which is bolted to the stationary head 16 of an injection moulding press. The die plates 32 have flanges 33, Fig. 6, which are clamped in a support block 18. The backing member of the brush is moulded in a space 59 defined partly by a mould block 55 carried by a support block 23. The block 23 is connected by spacing members, Fig. 5 (not shown), to a ram head 29 operated by a piston 30. Fig. 2 shows the parts in position for injection moulding through a nozzle 60 and passages 62, 66. The blocks 18, 23 are held together by means of pivoted locking arms 74. After injection, the ram head 29 and blocks 23, 18 are lowered, thus withdrawing the die plates from between the die plates 32. During separation of blocks 14, 23, the locking arms 74 are deflected outwardly to release the block 18 by the engagement of cam rollers 82 on the arms 74 with cam surfaces 83. Block 18 continues to move downwardly under the influence of springs 22 until stopped by the heads of bolts 19 engaging in slots 20 in block 18, (as seen in Fig. 3). A moulded sprue 86 has been withdrawn from the passage 62 by a sprue retaining member 69 secured to a mould base plate 25. This plate 25 continues to move downwardly with the block 23 until posts 26 secured thereto engage a stationary head 16a. Further movement of block 23 then causes ejection of the moulded brush by posts 90 which are secured to the plate 25 and extend slidably through the blocks 23, 55.
