A carton as shown in Fig. 2 is formed by applying heat and pressure to side-forming portions of a blank after it is set up, the blank having been pre-coated with a heat-sealable material ; and the machine which effects the operation comprises dies and punches supported for simultaneous movement in one direction. The blank is removed from a magazine 14, Fig. 5, by sucker elements 15 which are connected to a source of negative air pressure and are rocked about a shaft 17 through camoperated linkage, the drive being provided by an electric motor 27, Fig. 6. From a waiting station formed by a support 28 the blank is transferred by fingers 29 on a reciprocating carriage 30 to a position over one of four dies D moving in a circular path about a pillar 41 and having projections which carry the blank with the die as it rotates. The dies are secured on a carrier 40 rotated through gearing 42 driven from a gear-box 26, and each die comprises four walls, opposite walls 44, 45 embodying heater devices 46, Fig. 7. A switch 53 movable with each die is operated by a stationary cam 54 to provide current for the heaters. Also movable with each die is a punch 56 on a carrier 57 slidable axially of a guide 58 in order to set up the blank in the die. A roller 61 on the carrier 57 runs in a cam track 60 under control of a stationary cam 59 secured to the pillar 41. The punch 56 slides on pins 62 against the action of springs 63 and has pads 64 which apply pressure to the carton sides when the pads are urged outwards by a wedge 66. The carton is ejected from the die by a spring-loaded pad 68. A stripper 72 disengages the carton from the punch, and a guide 73, Fig. 3, takes it off to a channel 74 along which it is pushed by a member 75. The sequence of operations shown in Fig. 3 includes a setting up phase 77, a phase 78 during which the heater devices are effective, a cooling phase 79, and an ejection phase 80. The inner surface of the blank may be precoated with a thermoplastic, e.g. polyethylene ; or its opposite sides may be coated with paraffin wax, the areas which are to be adhered having a coating of thermoplastic adhesive under the wax. In a modification the heater devices are fitted to the punch 56 and the pressure pads provided in-the die walls. The outline form of a blank, before it is set up, is shown at the position 76 in Fig. 3.
