Abstract

887,140. Hydraulic turbines. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 5, 1960, No. 27307/60. Class 110 (3). An hydraulic turbine comprising gate means through which water is supplied to the turbine and a by-pass valve through which water is diverted upon closing of the gate means has linkage directly interconnecting the gate means and a movable valve member of the by-pass valve and pressure responsive means, connected to the valve member, operable, when the bypass valve has opened consequential upon closing of the gate means, to return the valve member gradually towards its closed position. The supply of water to the turbine is controlled by wicket gates connected to a rod 70 and the flow of water through a by-pass by a valve 36 comprising a fixed cone 38 and slidable valve sleeve 40. When the load on the turbine is suddenly released, the wicket gates are rapidly closed by a conventional governor within a few seconds. This causes the rod 70 to move to the right shifting lever 66 from position J to position I. This, in turn, moves rod 72 to the left and cause pivot 74 to move from C to D. The pivot A being momentarily stationary, the lower end of the lever 44 moves from E to F to open the valve 36. The penstock pressure entering the right-hand end of dashpot cylinder 48 through conduit 54 causes the piston 62 to move to the left, the rate of movement being determined by the size of orifice valves 61, 61<SP>1</SP>. As the piston 62 moves to the left, the lever 44 swings about point D so that the by-pass valve 36 slowly closes. When the characteristic of the discharge through the turbine and by-pass valve is non-linear, the pivot between the levers 68, 72 may be replaced by a bell-crank having a cam slot in which operates a cam roller attached to the lever 72 and a lever pivoted to a stationary support. A rod 92 attached to the piston 62, and provided with an abutment 94 cooperates with an adjustable stop member 96 to limit the amount by which the by-pass valve 36 is closed.
