Abstract

887,120. Selective punching apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 18, 1960 [May 22, 1959], No. 17489/59. Class 31 (2). [Also in Group XXIV] In tape punching apparatus comprising driving members 18 ... 23 rotatably mounted on an eccentric portion 24 of a driving shaft 14, deflecting means serve during the early part only of every forward stroke of a driving member to deflect it as if to engage a driven member and holding means are provided for holding the driving member in the deflected position to cause it to engage the driven member during the late part of the selected forward stroke. Bellcrank rockers 30 . . . 34, pivotally mounted on rocker shaft 16, 17, are connected by links 44 . . . 48 to driving members 18 . . . 23 respectively, the rockers being urged from a central position by springs 37 . . . 41. The deflecting means comprises a cam 29, mounted on a shaft 15 and driven from the shaft 14 through gearing 27, 28 in phase with the eccentric 24, adapted to engage portions 53, 54 of rockers 30, 31, for example, and deflect the driving members 18, 19 into central positions. Electromagnets 60, 61 operating on extensions 55, 56 of members 30, 31, hold the driving members 18, 19 in the deflected positions during the late portions of selected forward strokes. Electromagnets 62, 64 are associated with rockers 32, 34 and driving members 21, 23 respectively. Driving member 20 is pivotally connected to a rocking arm 66 so that on each revolution of the driving shaft 14 it hits the corresponding punch member and punches a hole in the tape. Up to five more holes may be punched depending upon which, if any, of the solenoids 60 . . . 64 are energized. A claw frame 26, having a lip 68 located between shoulders on each of the punch striker members, is oscillated vertically by the eccentric 24 and, during its downward movements, returns punch striker members to their original positions.
