Abstract

887,018. Counting-apparatus. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Jan. 13, 1960 [Jan. 13, 1959], No. 1276/60. Class 106 (1). In apparatus for counting road vehicles, a counter and two switches operated in sequence by the vehicles, are provided, the arrangement being such that after the counter has been actuated, it is inhibited from further actuation for a period dependent on the time elapsing between the operation of the switches. Miscounts due to contact " bounce" are thus eliminated. As shown, Fig. 1, a vehicle travelling in the direction of the arrow depresses a sleeper BSI to close a switch bsI thereby energizing a bi-stable polarized relay RI to close a contact rI. A capacitor C1 now charges through a resistor W, subsequent depression by the vehicle of a sleeper BSII closing a switch 6sII, thereby energizing a bi-stable polarized relay RII to open a contact rII. The capacitor C1 now discharges through a relay A to operate a counter Z, the subsequent release of the relay causing the relays RI, RII to reset. A second capacitor C2 of small capacitance charges quickly and can deliver, temporarily, the required charging current in the event of short contact interruptions due to vibrations. In a further arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), suitable for use on a motorway having two lanes of traffic, each lane is provided with a switching device and associated counter, the arrangement being such that pulses produced simultaneously or substantially simultaneously by the two switching devices result in only one count being registered, to provide for a vehicle straddling the two lanes. The embodiments described may be used to count the number of vehicles in a road sector, a counting station being provided at each end of the sector. In a further modification, not described in detail, operation of the sleepers BSI, BSII, is arranged to gate on and off a supply of standard frequency pulses which are counted, the vehicle counter being rendered operative again a predetermined time after the operation of the sleeper BSII, said time being dependent on the time duration between the operation of the sleepers BSI, BSII.
