Abstract

A process for the preparation of a mixture of dibromobenzenes rich in the meta isomer comprises contacting p-dibromobenzene in the liquid phase with an aluminium trihalide as catalyst wherein the halogenated atoms are chlorine or bromine or both, maintaining the mixture at a temperature between 85 DEG C. and 175 DEG C. for a period of time at least until the dibromobenzene isomers are substantially in equilibrium and cooling the mixture to a temperature below 50 DEG C. Catalysts specified include aluminium tribromide, trichloride, dibromochloride and dichlorobromide. Aluminium tribromide containing iron and copper bromides may be employed. The p-dibromobenzene and the catalyst may be dissolved in a common solvent. The catalyst is preferably used in a substantially dry state. The process may be continuous. In examples p-dibromobenzene is isomerised in the presence of aluminium bromide with and without cupric bromide.
