Abstract
886,967. Coloured polyurethane foam. CIBA Ltd. March 18, 1959 [March 18, 1958; Jan. 22, 1959], No. 9457/59. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups IV(a) and VIII] In a process for the production of coloured polyurethane plastics (including foamed products) by the polyaddition of organic compounds containing reactive hydrogen atoms with organic polyisocyanates, there is incorporated in the reaction mixture before or during the polyaddition, an organic dyestuff which contains at least one aliphatically bound hydroxyl group or a free amino group and which dyestuff is dissolved in an inert organic solvent. "Amino groups" include those directly attached and also those bound to an aromatic nucleus of the dyestuff through a bridge member as in -NHC 2 H 4 NH 2 , -NHNH 2 , -CONH 2 , CONHNH 2 and -SO 2 NH 2 groups. The hydroxyl groups can be part of an oxymethyl group attached to an aromatic nucleus or may be present in such groups as -COOH, -OC 2 H 4 OH, -SC 2 H 4 OH, -N(CH 3 )CH 2 CH 2 OH, -N(C 2 H 4 OH), -COOC 2 H 4 OH or -N(CH 3 )C 2 H 4 OC 2 H 4 OH. Azo, oxazine, thiazine, nitro, methine, anthraquinone, triphenylmethane and phthalocyanine dyestuffs are specified. Solvents referred to are acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, benzene, toluene, nitrobenzene and dimethyl-formamide. Pigments such as titanium dioxide and fluorescent materials can also be added. N-Methylmorpholine, triethylamine and pyridine are suitable catalysts for the reaction. In an Example (1) an adipic acid/glycol polyester, toluene-2 : 4- and 2 : 6-diisocyanates and a toluene solution of 4-amino-azobenzene are mixed. Water, a polyglycol ether and a basic catalyst e.g. ethylmorpholine are then added and reaction take place to give a yellow foamed polyurethane. Lacquers, pigments and coatings for fabrics are also prepared (see Groups IV(a) and VIII).
