Abstract

886,543. Motor vehicle frames. AUTO UNION G.m.b.H. Oct. 28, 1960 [Oct. 31, 1959], No. 37174/60. Class 79(4). [Also in Group XXXII] The frame of a motor vehicle comprises longitudinal members 6 of box section and spaced transverse members, the front portions of the longitudinals being inwardly inclined and having portions 5 of outwardly facing U section for the accommodation of torsion bars 2 forming part of the wheel supports. The torsion bars are supported in bearings 10 and 11 and pass through openings 7 in the inner web of the box structure longitudinals to the transverse member 9 where they are anchored. The openings 7 are adjacent bends in the frame members. The front part of the longitudinals are connected by a yoke 14 comprising feet 15, 16 having outer flanges 17, 18 and inner flanges 19, 20 welded flush with the webs 8 of the U sections. The flanges 17, 18 have curved portions 23 accommodating a tube 22 for mounting the upper link of the front wheel spring suspension. The yoke may include strengthening indentations 24 and is used for supporting the engine and rack steering gear.
