Abstract
886,268. Oil burners. DOWNS, E. S. July 18, 1960, No. 24921/60. Class 75(1) A liquid fuel burner comprises a ceramic pad 30 mounted at one end of a combustion chamber 24 and supplied with liquid fuel by a fitting 33, and a rigid plate 34 backing up the pad 30 and having a series of holes 41 aligned with holes in the pad and a series of holes 42 leading to the back of the pad, the first holes 41 supplying primary air to the front of the pad and the second holes 42 supplying primary air to the back of the pad. The pad is formed by densely packed random direction ceramic fibres of length between “ and ¢ inch and the surface of the pad is white. The pad may be soaked in a sodium silicate solution or in a colloidal silica solution to increase its tensile strength. The pad may be prevented from bulging outward by a metal screen placed on its front surface and secured to the combustion chamber 24. The oil fitting 33 is clamped to the centre of the pad and comprises a disc front portion having two fuel channels 36 of semi-circular section arranged in a V and opening rearwardly against the front face of the pad. The combustion chamber 24 is mounted coaxially within an outer casing 20 which also houses a fan 28 supplying air to the primary air holes 41, 42 in the backing plate and to secondary air holes 31 in the wall of the combustion chamber. The air from the fan is made to flow in streams parallel to the combustion chamber by vanes 55 which are mounted at the inlet end of the combustion chamber and comprise parts which are radially disposed in the casing 20 and parts which are disposed in the annular space 25 between the casing 20 and the combustion chamber. A baffle is mounted in the combustion chamber downstream of the pad and comprises a central disc 45 and an annulus 47 spaced from the disc. The disc and annulus are secured together by transverse braces 46 and the unit so formed is secured to the back up plate 34 by spacers 48. A segmental ceramic gasket 50 is secured to the annulus 47 and prevents excess fuel from running along the bottom of the combustion chamber. The discharge end of the combustion chamber is fitted with a large cone 65, a small reverse cone 66 and a perforated sleeve 68. The combustion gases discharge through the annular gap 69 between the two cones. An electric spark igniter 35a is positioned just ahead of the pad 30.
