[Also in Group XL (b)] A high-voltage generator comprises an inductance 12 and a capacitor 16 to which are applied an alternating current from an oscillator 18 at a frequency which is the resonant frequency of the inductance 12 and the capacity formed between the high-voltage terminal 13 and earth, the ratio of the input voltage to the output voltage being determined by the value of the capacitor 16 and the value of the capacitance formed between the high-voltage terminal 13 and earth, that is the housing 14, 15. In the theoretical diagram shown in Fig. 8 the input capacitor is indicated at 19 and the output capacitance formed by the high-voltage terminal 13 and the housing 14, 15 is shown at 20, 21. When a direct-current output is required rectifiers 30 may be used (see Fig. 11). The inductance 12 is constructed of a number of toroidal windings 2 wound on closed ferrite cores 3 mounted in stacks with each coil insulated from the next by inserts 4. Alternatively each coil may form a part of one large toroid. The circuit operates as a lumped-element openended transmission line.
