Abstract

Reinforced plastics are prepared by a process which comprises impregnating a reinforcing element with a mixture of styrene or a homolog thereof and a compound containing at least two ethylenic carbon to carbon double bonds which is a polyvinyl aromatic compound, a vinyl or allyl ester of a polybasic acid or an acrylic or methacrylic ester of a polyhydric alcohol, and polymerizing the mixture in the presence of a peroxide catalyst and a coupling agent. Specified alkyl styrenes are ortho-methyl styrene, metamethyl styrene, para-methyl styrene, ortho-ethyl styrene, para-ethyl styrene, 2,4-dimethyl styrene, 2,3-dimethyl styrene, 2,5-dimethyl styrene, paratertiary butyl styrene and 1,4-diethyl styrene. Specified cross-linking monomers are divinyl benzene, divinyl toluene, divinyl xylene, divinyl naphthalene, trivinyl benzene, triallyl acetyl citrate, triallyl cyanurate, divinyl phthalate, diallyl fumarate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate and trimethacrylate of p trimethylolpropane. The coupling agent may be a vinyl silane ester, e.g. a vinyl silane ester of the monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol, or a methacrylic acid-chromium chloride complex. The catalyst may be benzoyl or dicumyl peroxide. The monomer mixture may also contain a high molecular weight rubber, e.g. natural rubber, butadiene polymers and copolymers, and polyisoprene; and fillers, e.g. finely divided silicas, glasses, clays and carbon blacks. The reinforcing elements may comprise fibres of glass, asbestos, mica, rock, cotton, linen, rayon, silk, hair, nylon, polyacrylonitrile, or metal filaments or wires, e.g. of iron, aluminium or copper. Reinforced plastics prepared by the process of the invention may be in the form of laminates or pipes.
